Academic Programs
We offer two tracks of graduate programs - Master of Arts (MA) and Master of Divinity (MDiv) degrees; and the Postgraduate Diploma in Ministry. Both degrees are built upon a year-long general core foundation in biblical studies, historical theology, systematic theological and pratical theology.
The
MA Track
The MA Track is intended for those who seek advanced qualifications in Theological Studies (MATS), Pastoral Studies (MAPS), and Christian Education (MACE). The Degree will be suitable for those who hold accredited bachelor’s degrees from theological institutions. The total credit for this track is 60 semester hours and can be completed within two years of full-time study.
Those who complete the MATS degree will be able to:
- Gain theological understanding and insight through study of the heritage of Christian scripture, history, theology and ministry;
- Develop aptitudes for thinking critically, theologically and biblically in relation to faith, vocation and ministry;
- Acquire critical awareness of God’s mission in the world in its social, cultural and global contexts;
- Demonstrate depth of understanding in the particular field;
- Demonstrate competence in research and writing a thesis.
Those who complete the MAPS degree will be able to:
- Gain theological understanding and insight through study of the heritage of Christian scripture, history, theology and ministry;
- Develop aptitudes for thinking critically, theologically and biblically in relation to faith, vocation and ministry;
- Achieve academic excellence through an advanced understanding of the biblical, theological, and practical foundations for pastoral studies and church development;
- Appraise critical perspective of the Christian experience, thinking, and contributions as it relates to pastoral studies and church development in the African context;
- Apply principles for ministry based on Christ’s methods of teaching, discipling, caring, and witnessing to all people.
- Demonstrate the ability to construct a research project designed to address pastoral challenges consistent with best practices particularly in Africa.
Those who complete the MACE will be able to:
- Gain theological understanding and insight through study of the heritage of Christian scripture, history, theology and ministry;
- Develop aptitudes for thinking critically, theologically and biblically relation to faith, vocation and ministry;
- Critique educational practices and experiences with renewed theoretical and educational understanding.
- Demonstrate an understanding of foundational principles from the disciplines of human development and philosophy of education.
- Identify and articulate a leadership philosophy and implementation strategy within an educational system.
- Demonstrate appropriate use of curriculum and instructional principles.
- Gain an understanding of basic principles of teaching and learning as well as develop specific competencies for teaching, organizing, and administering educational programs.
- Develop competence for research and writing toward a thesis.
The
MDiv Track
The MDiv track is designed as a professional degree primarily for those who would like acquire knowledge and skills for ordained ministry and for general pastoral and religious leadership responsibilities in congregations and other settings. Those with non-theological degrees will find this track helpful.
Those who complete the MDiv in Christian Counseling will be able to:
- Develop an increased Bible and theological knowledge;
- Facilitate interpretation of scripture using appropriate hermeneutical principles;
- Encourage formulation of theological beliefs based on biblical and historical perspectives;
- Progress in the practice of classical spiritual disciplines;
- Develop a Great Commission perspective that is demonstrated by skills in evangelism, equipping disciples, preaching and teaching, corporate worship, and leadership;
- Demonstrate knowledge and competence in various situations of individual and group counseling;
- Demonstrate competence in writing and research toward a thesis.
Those who complete the MDiv in Leadership will be able to:
- Develop an increased Bible and theological knowledge;
- Facilitate interpretation of scripture using appropriate hermeneutical principles;
- Encourage formulation of theological beliefs based on biblical and historical perspectives;
- Progress in the practice of classical spiritual disciplines;
- Develop a Great Commission perspective that is demonstrated by skills in evangelism, equipping disciples, preaching and teaching, corporate worship, and leadership;
- Demonstrate knowledge and competence providing leadership in various institutions, including the church, para-church and other related institutions;
- Demonstrate competence in writing and research toward a thesis.
The Postgraduate Diploma in Ministry (PgDM) provides students with a foundation in Biblical and Theological knowledge with emphases on practical learning in a ministry context. Credits from this program are not transferrable into any of the graduate programs above.
